Porthmadog
General Information
Porthmadog, fondly known as “Port” is a small coastal town in Gwynedd. This harbour town developed in the 19th Century as an exporter of slate to England, which these days is more of a holiday destination. As the gateway to Snowdonia National Park and platform stop for the Ffestiniog Railway, Porthmadog is a popular holiday and day-tripper town.
The Ffestinog Railway is world renowned. Originally built for the slate industry, today the steam train provides endless entertainment to its visitors.
With the beautiful Snowdonia mountain as the backdrop, one cannot help but be impressed by Porthmadog’s setting. There are interesting shops, great places to eat, as well as being rich in historical maritime information.
The surrounding slate mines remind tourists of the industrial heritage of the area. There are guided tours available in peak season. Porthmadog’s greatest landmark is The Cob – a mile-long bank across the estuary.
The harbour is great to sit and relax watching the boats and small yachts drift by. Walking is the best way to view all that the town has to offer, including Grisiau Mawr (the big steps). There are plenty of little side streets and alleyways filled with charm to explore. Although small, Porthmadog has all the amenities and facilities to enjoy a holiday here, from luxury to daily essentials. Accommodation varies from bed and breakfast establishments to guest houses.
